Frequently Asked Questions

I have never ridden a horse before - can I still try polo?

Yes! We welcome everyone with any or no experience - our club is made up of seasoned players, members with previous riding experience and those whose first time riding is on a polo pony. When you sign up to lessons, you can add a comment with your riding experience, so our coach can ensure the best lesson for you.

How do I sign up for lessons?

Make sure you join our facebook group (Edinburgh University Polo Club) where sign up sheets will be posted each week. Lessons during the week structured for different ability lessons, as advertised on the sign up sheet. The same goes for chukka sessions, which are invitational for those deemed of a safe enough standard. For new members, the first lesson counts as a 'trial', with membership being required to book subsequent lessons.

You will pay for your lesson directly at the yard; if you cannot make a lesson for a legitimate reason, you should contact the facebook group to alert the free space. If you miss a lesson with limited cancellation time or with no warning, you may still be charged.

How do I purchase membership / what membership should I buy?

To purchase your Polo membership, please see our Lesson and Membership page, or go to the Edinburgh University Sports Union website - we have membership options for UoE students, non-student and single-semester options. There is also a social sponsorship option which allows you to join in all of our socials and gain event discounts, but you are not covered to play polo.

Full playing membership is required to play polo and do lessons - this insures you as a rider, whilst officially making you part of the club. Membership prices can be found on the Sports Union website.

What should I wear to a lesson?

You must wear a riding hemet and shoes with a low heel to play. Riding boots and helmets are available to borrow at the yard, but please bring your own if possible. We are very relaxed - wear whatever riding kit makes you feel comfortable (most of us wear jeans). For evening chukkas, knee pads are highly advised; for official match play, knee pads must be worn, along with polo whites (or any white jeans). The arena (and grass pitches) are outside, so please bring layers as it can get quite cold.
