SUPA Summer Nationals 2022

SUPA Nationals are the pinnacle of university polo, with nationals being held in summer and winter at Offchurch and Rugby polo clubs. This summer nationals saw Edinburgh entering three teams with nine players - our most entries yet. The tournament had 175 teams entered - the largest polo tournament in the world - across divisions beginner to open.
Novice 2: Alexandra, Ollie, Paddy and Chase (3rd)
Over the weekend our Novice 2 team fought hard against universities from Scotland and England to achieve great results - despite the soaring temperatures and sunburn, our players demonstrated great teamwork. The tense final match against Warwick ended in a tie-breaking run down, giving Edinburgh the final edge to gain 3rd.
Beginner 1: Sofia, Fernando and Callum (5th)
At their first Nationals, the Edinburgh B1 team played exceptionally well against tough competition at the top of the beginner division. Although not coming in the top 3 the team demonstrated great teamwork and fantastic plays, considering this is was their first competition as a team - we can’t wait to see what they achieve next season!
Beginner Combined: Kayleigh, Nelly and Reika (3rd)
Teaming up with St Andrews , the Edi / St Andrews Beginner Combined team played fantastically, being their first match on grass and together! Having only started polo this academic year, the team demonstrated how hard work pays off, encouraging members new to polo to do the same.

A massive thanks must go to James Douglas for his great coaching throughout the year, Kinross Polo Club for the horse hire, and SUPA for another great nationals.
Edinburgh Summer Tournament 2022
24th May
Edinburgh Reds: Alexandra, Paddy, Eliza, Fernando
Edinburgh Blues: Chase, Izy, Nick, Sofia
Dick Vet Polo: Georgie, Ollie, Anna, Hannah, Veronica

Edinburgh Summer Tournament 2022, hosted at Dalmahoy
Tuesday saw fierce internal rivalry and the resurgence of the Dick Vet polo team at the first Edinburgh Summer Tournament - an inter-club series of chukkas with mixed ability teams. Spectators watched on in suspense, whilst enjoying the bbq offerings and copious amounts of Pimm's in the soft Edinburgh drizzle.
First up were the Blues v Dick Vet - part of EUPC, our vet school players came together to bring back the Vet team and put up a strong opposition to the Blues. The mixed-ability teams, from beginner to intermediate, allowed a scope of members to participate in the tournament, with it being some players' first competitive chukkas. The Vets pipped the Blues to the post 1-0, starting their campaign strong.
Next we had the Vets and Reds battle it out. The teams proved to be fierce rivals, with players marking opposition who are normally teammates. The game was shaped by strong backhands and impressive runs from Ollie and Paddy, but the Reds clinched the win 4-0, marking a return for the 'home teams' against the Vets.
Last up were the Blues v Reds - the battle of the Edinburgh teams. Successful penalty shots on goal meant that the Reds took the win 2-0, making them the Summer Tournament champions.

We would like to thank James Douglas for all his coaching during the year, and for facilitating the perfect event to wrap up yet another great year of polo. Another thanks to all our members and friends who came to watch, and to all the players for demonstrating what a great year of training and playing the polo club has had. And to Lusia for the great photos!
St Andrews Charity Tournament 2022

St Andrews Charity Polo Tournament, Errol Park
Edinburgh had both a beginner and novice team competing at the St Andrews Charity Tournament this weekend, in support of Help for Heroes. Both teams fought hard across the first two days, with the chukkas being live streamed on the @eupoloclub instagram.

Edinburgh Novice results (3rd)

On day 1, the Novice team played Exeter and Warwick. After a convincing 1-0 win against Exeter, Edinburgh met their match playing Warwick, loosing 0-3. On day 2, Edinburgh faced their ancient rivals St Andrews for a two-chukka match to decide third place. Following some hotly contested goals, penalties and ride offs, the teams proved equal, finishing in joint 3rd at 1-1. The Edinburgh players demonstrated great plays and teamwork - we are looking forward to what they achieve next season.

Edinburgh Beginner results (1st)

Day 1 saw the Edinburgh Beginner team beat Exeter 1-0 minutes before the Novice team's similar victory. A great win against Warwick 4-3 (1-1) saw them into the first half of the finals on day 2. Facing Durham, Edinburgh finished day 2 1-0 down, going into the day 3 final with all to play for. The day 3 finals, in front of 2,000 spectators at Errol Park, provided the perfect environment for Edinburgh to return 1-0 to Durham, settling the score. In the end, a foot mallet penalty shoot-out was rejected in favour of joint 1st place - a fantastic result for our beginners to mark the end of their season, and progression to novice level.
